In our interview with Dr. Kelly Everson we discuss from a psychologist’s perspective, some of the behaviors she is currently seeing with her clients during this difficult time and some basic tips for parents and families.

In our interview, Kelly discusses some basic tips for managing behaviors including:
- Tips for dealing with behaviors and anxiety during the current pandemic (and anytime)
- Coping skills – finding a coping skill that works for your child and modeling it for them
- Different ideas to try (weighted blanket, dark space, exercise, breathing, etc…}
- Behavioral Plans
- Introducing behavior charts or plans (which can be adapted depending on age, cognition, maturity level)
- Rewards/consequence – the earlier a child learns this concept the better. It is important for the transition into teenage and adult years as well
- Creating structure or routine
- Coping skills – finding a coping skill that works for your child and modeling it for them
- Why consistency, routine and understanding reward and consequence is important
- Parents as models: what are we modeling for our kids? How to reflect on our own responses or reactions
Kelly Everson, PsyD
Dr. Kelly Everson is Co-Owner and Florida Licensed Psychologist at Palm Beach Behavioral Health and Wellness. Additionally, Dr. Everson serves as the Training Director for PBBHW’s psychology training programs.
Dr. Everson specializes in psychotherapy and assessment of children, adolescents and families. Dr. Everson is experienced in group therapy with adolescents and parents, individual therapy with children, adolescents and adults, and family therapy. Dr. Everson leads the Autism Spectrum Clinic at PBBHW and primarily works with children, adolescents and adults diagnosed with ASD. In addition to ASD, Dr. Everson has worked with a variety of presenting problems, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), mood disorders, peer pressure and bullying.
